UBS Agrees to $985 Million Settlement with France Over Tax Evasion. UBS Group AG has agreed to pay $985 million to settle a long-standing legal case with France over aiding tax evasion, significantly reducing the original 2019 penalty of 4.5 billion euros. The settlement includes a 730 million euro fine and 105 million euros in civil damages for activities between 2004 and 2012. UBS was found guilty of illegally soliciting clients to transfer money out of France. The legal battle lasted over a decade. Additionally, UBS is addressing other legal issues, including a $300 million settlement related to Credit Suisse and mortgage-backed securities with the U.S. Department of Justice.
