Stripe Merchant Key Leak Exposes 688,000 Individuals' Financial Data A significant operational risk has emerged for online businesses due to the exposure of hundreds of Stripe merchant keys. Approximately 35 GB of sensitive data from 659 merchant accounts, affecting around 688,000 individuals, was leaked on a data-trading forum on August 18. This incident, not involving a breach of Stripe's systems, resulted from credential exposure, potentially sourced from infostealer logs or poorly protected backups. The leaked keys allow unauthorized access to payment and payout functionalities, posing financial risks. Merchants are advised to rotate keys, apply access limits, and enhance security measures to mitigate potential damage.
